Using 3D Rendering to Discover the Headstone of Sophia Connell Sherman
Severely damaged state, with heavy erosion on its face and a large fracture running through the middle of the stone.
We used a cutting-edge custom-designed photogrammetry program for gravestones to estimate the inscription’s original position and identify the name of the person buried beneath it.
The Story Behind: Sophia Connell Sherman
When the gravestone was discovered, it was in a severely damaged state, with heavy erosion on its face and a large fracture running through the middle of the stone.
We removed the stone from the ground and carefully cleaned it, before using a combination of conservation-grade epoxy and a basalt pin to stabilize the fracture and prevent further damage. Our advanced conservation techniques ensured that the gravestone was restored and stabilized so that it could once again serve as a tribute to the life of Sophia Connel Sherman.
To uncover the lost history of the gravestone, we partnered with Andrew Perrin, a researcher who had developed a cutting-edge photogrammetry program for gravestones. Using a series of 96 photos of the inscription, we were able to estimate the stone's original inscription before it eroded away to identify the name of the person buried beneath it. Through careful analysis and deduction, we were able to determine the identity of Sophia Connel Sherman and her relationship to other members of her family.
