Large Marble Tablet Stone

Located in a rustic church cemetery, this beautiful marble tablet stone was once trapped and overshadowed by a cedar tree. The thick tablet was set in a limestone keyway and was badly fractured, with the lower section fractured on an angle.

Our conservation process began with lateral movement of the gravestone a few inches away from the tree to provide enough space for its growth. We carefully removed material to square off the lower half of the tablet before securing it with non-hydraulic lime mortar. To ensure a durable repair, we joined the tablet with an exceptional conservation grade epoxy.

After the conservation process, the tablet was thoroughly cleaned with a biocide, and we have plans for an infill treatment to improve its appearance. To counteract the stone's weak nature, we also used a consolidant.

The result of our efforts is a beautiful gravestone that now stands tall and proud, honoring its subject in a way that will endure for generations to come.
